Snacking in Japan.

I never lose weight in Japan... nor do I put on any!

Japanese food is healthy and ultra fresh as far as the ingredients are concerned, and Japanese families combine various foods, many of them seasonal, in order to achieve optimal nutrition. Some of these foods taste quite strange to a European, but I have taken to (almost) all of them and could go on eating them, several times a day, day after day.

The food that Europeans are not supposed to like, is natto, fermented soya beans which go runny and taste, as a friend of mine said when she first introduced me to to them, “like smelly socks left in the back of the fridge for too long”. I have since had natto once or twice and, once I got over its runny nature (a texture like raw egg white or liquid honey, poured over hot cooked rice) found that I was able to eat it and even possibly to enjoy it. It is not, however, an experience that I have sought to replicate! It is in any case more polite to say that one cannot eat natto, as Japanese people enjoy having one food that no non Japanese will touch...

The other is mochi, a dumpling made of cooked rice, which is pounded and pounded and mixed with water and pounded some more. It ends up getting very sticky indeed. My first encounter with it was a big lump which filled my mouth and which I chewed and chewed and could manage neither to swallow nor to spit out. It is said that the occasional person dies when it gets stuck in their throat -- but fortunately I was not one of those. Nowadays, I have grown to like it in very small quantities, particularly when wrapped around some other goodie.

But I meant to write about snacking. On holidays in Japan, I love heading out for a good walk. If anywhere near a town or a convenience store, one need never worry about getting hungry. Snacks are everywhere. There is my top favourite, onigiri (a triangle of cooked rice, stuffed with some delicious filling and wrapped in a sheet of seaweed), a well-stuffed white bread sandwich, a see-through plastic container with cooked vegetables or fish, some rice crackers, a piece of Baumkuchen (surprisingly popular in Japan), and all this can be accompanied by a fruit juice, some green tea in a plastic bottle or some sweet milky coffee, hot or cold, in a metal can. A huge choice of drinks is available in the vending machines scattered throughout the country (including the top of Mount Fuji, if I remember well) and, depending on the season, can be hot or cold or a choice of both. Japan is a wonderful country for snacking -- and I enjoy every opportunity of doing so!
